NHS Greater Manchester Medicines Optimisation Team and GP practices across Greater Manchester are working together to review people who are prescribed a type of medication called an SGLT2 inhibitor.

SGLT2 inhibitors include canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, empagliflozin and ertugliflozin – a group of medicines that can be used to treat type 2 diabetes, heart failure or kidney disease.

Change to Dapagliflozin

If you take canagliflozin, empagliflozin or ertugliflozin, your prescription may be changed to dapagliflozin following the review.

Dapagliflozin is the preferred SGLT2 inhibitor in Greater Manchester. It works in the same way as the other SGLT2 inhibitors and has the same benefits for your health. 

This change is happening across the NHS because dapagliflozin is now available at a lower cost. This helps Greater Manchester use NHS resources responsibly while ensuring you continue to receive the same standard of care.
