NDH/CVD Keeping Well During the Festive Season
Keeping Well During the Festive Season
As the festive season approaches, it’s a time for celebration, family and good food. It can also bring a few extra challenges when you’re managing a health condition. These simple tips can help you enjoy the holidays while looking after yourself.
Have a plan for when you’re unwell
Winter often brings colds, flu and other bugs. Having a plan in place can make things easier if you do become unwell:
- Keep an eye on symptoms: If your condition is affected by illness, check in with yourself more often so you can spot any changes early.
- Stay hydrated: Being unwell can lead to dehydration, so drink plenty of water or suitable drinks recommended for your condition.
- Take your regular medication: Continue taking your prescribed medication unless your clinical team has advised otherwise. If you are unsure, speak with a pharmacist, GP or specialist team.
Make sure you have what you need
Because many pharmacies and suppliers close over the holidays, it helps to plan ahead.
- Refill your prescriptions early: Ensure you have enough medication and any equipment you rely on.
- Carry spares if you travel: Pack a little more than you think you’ll need in case of delays or lost items.
- Think about backups: If your condition involves equipment or aids, make sure you have alternative options if something stops working.
Plan ahead for balanced meals
The holidays often involve rich food and big portions. You can still enjoy your favourites while keeping balance in mind.
- Have smaller portions of indulgent dishes and add plenty of vegetables, salad or lean protein.
- If you’re attending an event, take a look at the menu in advance if you can, so you know there are options that suit your needs.
- If you cook at home, consider a few lighter recipes alongside seasonal treats.

Stay Active
It’s easy for routines to slip during the holidays, but a bit of activity can help with energy levels, mood and general wellbeing.
- Fit in short walks after meals or plan fun family activities like ice skating, local trails or festive events.
- If the weather isn’t great, try gentle at-home exercises or stretches.
- Choose activities that feel safe and appropriate for your condition.
Be mindful with alcohol
Alcohol can affect symptoms, medication and sleep for many conditions.
- Drink responsibly: Avoid drinking on an empty stomach and pace yourself.
- Choose lower-sugar or lighter options: These can help you avoid feeling unwell later in the evening.
- Stay aware of how you feel: Alcohol can make it harder to notice symptoms, so check in with yourself regularly.
- Drink water between alcoholic drinks: This helps you stay hydrated.
Look after your stress levels
The festive period can be busy, and stress can make some health conditions harder to manage.
- Give yourself time to rest and avoid overcommitting.
- Try simple relaxation techniques like deep breathing, short walks or quiet moments away from the hustle and bustle.
- Aim for good sleep where possible, as tiredness can make everything feel more difficult.
Set Realistic Goals and Be Kind to Yourself
Allow yourself to enjoy the holidays without pressure for perfection. Set small, realistic goals that keep you on track without feeling restrictive.
Wishing you a wonderful, healthy, and joyful festive season! Remember, you’ve got this, and small steps can make a big difference.
